Soprano MARIA VALDES is a first-year Adler Fellow who recently appeared as Susanna in Merola Opera Program’s 2013 production of The Marriage of Figaro, and covered the role of Magnolia in SFO’s summer 2014 production of Show Boat. An award-winner in the regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Valdes is also the winner of the top prize at the Corbett Opera Scholarship Competition at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She has been heard in concert with ensembles including the Georgia State University Singers, the Atlanta Chamber Players, the Atlanta Sacred Chorale, the choirs of Emory University, Bent Frequency, and the Bellingham Festival of Music in Washington. Valdes will make her San Francisco Opera debut this fall singing the role of Clorinda in Rossini’s La Cenerentola.

It was cold in New York in February, 2008 when I flew into LaGuardia airport, but not too cold.  After years of living in Lexington, KY, where I raised a son and worked on a Master’s in Vocal performance at the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre, I always flew into the busiest airport of my hometown for opera auditions with the romantic head of a twenty-something professional virgin from the midwest—this, when I was anything but.

American soprano Heidi Stober makes her role debut as the innocent, but resilient Magnolia Hawks in Show Boat. Heidi made her San Francisco Opera debut in the 2010-11 Season as Sophie in Werther and has since returned as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Atalanta in Xerxes, Pamina in The Magic Flute and Nannetta in Falstaff. Currently a principal artist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Heidi took time out of her busy performance schedule to answer our five questions. Mexican-American baritone Efraín Solís is a first-year Adler Fellow who has been seen in performances throughout the Bay Area. In the 2013 Merola Opera Program, he sang Junius in The Rape of Lucretia and covered the Count in The Marriage of Figaro. As a graduate student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, he performed the title role of Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, and the title role of Gianni Schicchi and in the spring of 2013 he joined Opera Santa Barbara as a member of their Studio Artist Program. Chosen as a finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the 2013 Houston Grand Opera's Eleanor McCollum Competition, he will make his San Francisco Opera debut as Prince Yamadori in Madame Butterfly, and can be seen in A Masked Ball and Tosca in the 2014-15 Season. Below, Efraín discusses his education in San Francisco, musical family, and love of artisanal coffee.

Introduction

Backstage at San Francisco Opera is a fascinating, fast-moving, mysterious and sacred space for the Company’s singers, musicians, dancers, technicians and production crews. Musical and staging rehearsals are on-going, scenery is loaded in and taken out, lighting cues are set, costumes and wigs are moved around and everything is made ready to receive the audience.
