Opera is frequently called the most grand of the performing arts, and our production of Mephistopheles is grand opera at its grandest! From the over 300 costumes, the thousands of jewels, and even the number of naked bodies you’ll see onstage, it is an amazing production that demonstrates just how big opera can be. And how many skilled craftsmen, artisans, employees, and artists it takes to make it this grand!

This Friday, San Francisco Opera will celebrate the opening of our 91st Season with a gala opening night like none other. Co-chaired by Ann Girard and Mai Shiver, San Francisco Opera Guild’s sold-out 2013 Opera Ball: The Garden of Good and Evil will be created by celebrity event designer Colin Cowie and will reflect the celestial and devilish themes of the evening’s performance––late 19th-century Italian composer Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele.

If you were to browse through a high school student's iTunes playlist, you'd be more likely to find pop hits by artists such as One Direction or Rihanna than you would arias from classic operas. But what happens when you tear students away from YouTube and Snapchat for a day to see Puccini's Tosca at the War Memorial Opera House? Find out from high school student, Kelsey Page as she describes her experience attending the Madeline H. Russell High School Day at the Opera last November. Korean Baritone, Joo Won Kang, is a second-year Adler Fellow and made his San Francisco Opera debut as the Second Priest in Mozart's The Magic Flute in 2012.   Joo Won has since been seen on the War Memorial Opera House Stage as Captain Gardiner in Heggie's Moby-Dick, Marullo in Verdi's Rigoletto, and as a Noble in Wagner's Lohengrin.  He was most recently seen as Hermann in this past summer's Tales of Hoffmann.  Prior to his Adler Fellowship, Joo Won was a member of the Young Artist Program at Florida Grand Opera where he sang the role of Giorgio Germont in Verdi's La Traviata and the Duke of Verona in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. Joo Won will be seen this upcoming fall in the role of Figaro in 'Barber of Seville for Families' in a special English translation on November 24 and 30.

Introduction

Backstage at San Francisco Opera is a fascinating, fast-moving, mysterious and sacred space for the Company’s singers, musicians, dancers, technicians and production crews. Musical and staging rehearsals are on-going, scenery is loaded in and taken out, lighting cues are set, costumes and wigs are moved around and everything is made ready to receive the audience. From the principal singers, chorus and orchestra musicians to the creative teams for each opera, in addition to the many talented folks who don’t take a bow on stage, this blog offers unique insight, both thought-provoking and light-hearted, into the life backstage at San Francisco Opera.
