One of the most riveting scenes of Mark Adamo's opera The Gospel of Mary Magdalene occurs when Peter is overcome with grief for having denied Jesus three times before his crucifixion.


As the stage is bathed in blood red light, Peter falls to his knees, wailing, "How many times will I remember this? Seven times seven?" This moment of anguish has inspired other composers to some of their most dramatic and poignant music as well.

Last Sunday San Francisco Opera invited a small group to attend and live tweet the final dress rehearsal of The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. The opera by Mark Adamo has its world premiere on Wednesday, June 19, so this was truly a first glimpse for the public.

We here at San Francisco Opera are often asked, "Who was that great singer who played so-and-so in that one opera you did a few years ago? I feel like I have seen them here before." More often than not, the artist in question is one of the fabulous young artists we have had grace our stage. 

This summer's production of "Cosi fan tutte" features the San Francisco Opera debut of German mezzo-soprano Christel Lötzsch in the role of Dorabella, as well as the mainstage San Francisco Opera debut of bass-baritone Adler Fellow Philippe Sly as Guglielmo. In addition, the rest of the Cosi cast is comprised of incredibly talented young artists who have recently appeared on our stage. For today's photo blog, we highlight each principal Cosi artist who has had past roles at San Francisco Opera. This way, when you see the production and think to yourself, "I feel like I've seen them somewhere before...," you'll impress your seatmates by knowing where.

Our next Adler Profile features tenor & first-year Adler Fellow A.J. Glueckert who hails from Portland, Oregon.  A.J. is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is a former young artist at both Utah Festival Opera and Minnesota Opera.  He was a 2012 participant in the Merola Opera Program and is also a former Apprentice Artist at Santa Fe Opera.  His past performances include the role of Crown Prince in the world-premiere of Kevin Puts' Silent Night at Minnesota Opera and Opera Philadelphia; Mr. Owens in Argento's Postcard from Morocco for the Merola Opera Program; and the Drum Major in Berg's Wozzeck with Opera Parallèle.  He will make his San Francisco Opera debut this summer in the world-premiere production of Mark Adamo's The Gospel of Mary Magdalene (check out his feature profile on San Francisco Classical Voice here).  An avid sports fan, A.J. looks forward to rooting on the Portland Trailblazers and other Pacific Northwest teams throughout the season.

Erin Johnson is a mezzo-soprano in her first year of the Adler Fellowship at San Francisco Opera. Originally from Washington, New Jersey, Erin studied music and religious studies at Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania and completed her Master in Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas. She was a participant in the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program in 2009 prior to her participation in the Merola Opera Program in 2012. She made her San Francisco Opera debut in the role of Mrs. Medlock in the world-premiere production of Nolan Gasser's The Secret Garden this past spring. She will be featured on the War Memorial Opera House stage this coming summer in the world-premiere of Mark Adamo's The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. Erin is the next of our talented young artists to be featured this week on Backstage at San Francisco Opera

Introduction

Backstage at San Francisco Opera is a fascinating, fast-moving, mysterious and sacred space for the Company’s singers, musicians, dancers, technicians and production crews. Musical and staging rehearsals are on-going, scenery is loaded in and taken out, lighting cues are set, costumes and wigs are moved around and everything is made ready to receive the audience.
